How to differentiate Essential Oils from Perfumed Oils
There are several methods whereby you can recogonize an essential oil. Generally, selection ofessential oils is now available from health food shops, chemists and by mail order. When you are buying them, be careful to choose essential oils, not perfumed oils. Although these may well smell delicious, they are not beneficial for the purpose essential oils are used for – aromatherapy.
The following are the characteristics of an essential oil:
- Thin and watery rather than oily.
- Swift to evaporate and it wont leave a greasemark on paper.
- Overpoweringly scented when neat, which can be quiet unpleasant.
- Perfumed Oils will always smell pleasant whereas essential oils often have more of the effect of smelling salts.
On a broader scale, all essential oils fall into three basic categories:
1. These Oils evaporate very quickly. They are generally uplifting and stimulating, with a greenish, fresh aroma.
2. There are some type where they are essential to help with the most bodily functions and metabolism
3. These type of oils are extremely relaxing, sometimes sedative and generally have a lovely, warm aroma.
If you have ever bought essential oils (or going to buy them), then you can note that these oils that are essential are always sold in tinted glass bottles. This is because they are special oils that are damaged by light and should be always stored in a dark, cool place – therefore need a little care.
On a final note, be always careful to keep the lids tightly screwed on your bottles, otherwise you will be disappointed to discover your oils have evaporated into thin air.
